Turner’s desire to understand the world led him to pioneer Romantic paintings, focusing on capturing the emotional experience of the landscape through expressive brush marks and luminous colours. For many years he trained as an accomplished watercolourist leading him to work boldly and quickly. His skills, translated into an eclectic style, led him to paint intuitively. Common features of his paintings are large swathes of colour, working the oil paints to create an almost watercolour style.
Stories of Turner paint a picture of a man so dedicated to his mission of true representation that he strapped himself to the mast of a ship during a storm in order to fully immerse himself in the event. He was equally interested in the tranquillity of the countryside and how the rapid innovation of the industrial revolution was affecting the landscapes.
